Game Engines
Unreal
One of the most prominent games of Unreal Engine is without a doubt, Fortnite. Unreal is known for their realistic and detailed textures, lighting and shadows, water physics, and just insane graphics overall. This engine is used by AAA studios all over the industry, many studios have been ditching their own proprietary engines in favor of the powerhouse that is Unreal. Fortnite is a huge game, with content updates seemingly releasing multiple times a week. A game like Fortnite couldn't be made in any other engine as every single graphical element is top of the line even whilst having a cartoony art style.
Unity
One of my favorite Unity games is Subnautica. I believe Unknown Worlds chose to use Unity because of their indie friendly business model. From a technical standpoint, Unity is not the best engine on the market, however they used to have such a good user experience and pricing that it was pretty much the go to engine for small development teams, Unknown Worlds being pretty small at the time. I remember playing through Subnautica on my Xbox One and having horrible frame drops constantly, maybe that's one of the reasons the dev team has switched to UE5 for Subnautica's sequel.Source
Half Life 2, one of my favorite games of all time, was developed on Source Engine and was released by Valve in 2004. The original version of Source Engine, called GoldSrc, was a modded version of the Id software engine used to make Quake. Some of the most influential games of all time were developed in Source, such as the Half Life, Portal, and Left 4 Dead franchises. Although now outdated, Source Engine was once universally praised for its hyper advanced physics system. Hammer, Source's level editor, is known for its eerie and creepy atmosphere, even in non horror games.
